Hargreaves, Anderson set for United debut

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to let £35million new arrivals Owen Hargreaves and Anderson loose over the next 72 hours as Manchester United's pre-season campaign steps up a pace.

Hargreaves spent the entire Far East tour as a frustrated spectator as he struggled to overcome a minor ankle injury he aggravated in training.

Meanwhile, Anderson only started training at Carrington this week after spending his summer on Copa America duty with Brazil.

But, in the aftermath of last night's 3-2 friendly defeat to Inter Milan at Old Trafford, Ferguson confirmed both men would play some part in United's next two friendlies; at Doncaster tomorrow and Peterborough 24 hours later.

'Owen Hargreaves and Anderson will be involved over the next couple of games,' said Ferguson.

Neither player is expected to play any part in Sunday's Community Shield showdown with Chelsea at Wembley but, provided they come through their forthcoming tests unscathed, and a likely appearance at either Dunfermline or Glentoran next Wednesday, both should be in Ferguson's squad when United open the defence of their Premier League title against Reading on August 12.

Having kept faith with his starting line-up throughout the Inter defeat, Ferguson will use the trips to Doncaster and Peterborough to give the rest of his squad some much-needed match practice.

And, by the time they turn out at Wembley for the FA Cup final re-match, Ferguson expects to see some defensive improvement too.

Wayne Rooney put United in front but Inter struck three times late in the opening period, with Luis Figo a key figure in each strike.

And although Adriano's own goal gave the Red Devils hope, they could not stave off a defeat which, while not upsetting Ferguson too much, left the Scot in no doubt where his side need to improve.

'The defending in the first-half was very poor,' he admitted.

'You will not win any games, no matter who you are playing against, if you defend like that.

'We were so open in the first half. Maybe we would have had a few more free-kicks if it had been an English game but we were all over the place at times. If you defend like that, you will lose.'

Tevez deal today or High Court awaits

Thursday is D-Day for Carlos Tevez - with the warring parties under pressure to strike a deal and avoid a lengthy court battle.

Talks between the Argentina striker's representatives and West Ham broke up last night without an agreement reached.

After today, Tevez's agent Kia Joorabchian and his company Media Sports Investment (MSI) will have to lodge all their papers with the High Court.

Once that move takes place, the dispute will move into another phase and it will become much more unlikely that a settlement can be reached.

West Ham are asking for a fee of several million pounds to release Tevez from his contract and registration and allow his move to Manchester United to proceed before the start of the season.

MSI are claiming they own the player and have lodged a £30million High Court lawsuit against the Hammers. They claim West Ham should only be paid £100,000, as agreed in a controversial third-party agreement that the club ripped up in April.

The key to achieving a settlement is for the parties to agree a sum that is not only acceptable to both, but also to the Premier League who are keeping a close watch to ensure West Ham do not act as though they are governed by those agreements.

A High Court case is likely to centre on a contract proposed by West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson in December under which Tevez would cease to be a Hammers player this summer.

West Ham will claim that although they sent MSI this new contract, Tevez and Joorabchian never signed it and returned it to them - and that the club passed this document to the Premier League in February.

MSI will insist they did sign the contract and will provide a copy of a signed document to the court.

West Ham will argue that if that agreement had existed then they would have been cleared of having illegal third-party agreements instead of being fined £5.5million by an independent disciplinary commission in April.

2 more defender for Manchester City, Vedran Corluka and Javier Garrido

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson continued his remarkable spending spree today by signing two defenders.

Croatia international Vedran Corluka and Spaniard Javier Garrido are the latest additions to the squad.

Corluka, 21, arrives from Dinamo Zagreb for an undisclosed fee, although reports from Croatia suggest City have paid about £7million.

He has signed a five-year deal, subject to a work permit, after attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.

Corluka was part of the Croatia side that defeated England 2-0 last season. He can play either in central defence or at right back.

Garrido, 22, has agreed a four-year deal after Eriksson paid the Spanish club £1.5million for the player's services.

He was looking for a new challenge after Sociedad's relegation from the top flight.

Eriksson's has now made six new signings since he took over with Rolando Bianchi, Martin Petrov, Gelson Fernandes and Geovanni all moving to the club.

Manchester United 2 - 3 Inter Milan (Friendly)

Full report:

United tasted defeat in their first domestic action of pre-season, losing out in a five-goal thriller to Inter Milan at Old Trafford.

A massive crowd of 73,738 - a record friendly attendance at Old Trafford - were treated to a highly entertaining 90 minutes between the champions of England and Italy.

Roberto Mancini's Inter won thanks to a brace from David Suazo and a neat finish from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Wayne Rooney and an Adriano own goal were United's efforts.

The Italian champions appeared sharper in the first half, but United were clearly on top after the interval and were unfortunate not to at least take the game to a penalty shootout.

Injuries prevented Sir Alex Ferguson from fielding any of his three summer signings, with Anderson, Nani and Owen Hargreaves watching from the stands.

Within three minutes Ronaldo had given them and the rest of the packed crowd a sample of his skills, tormenting Maxwell with his beguiling array of tricks before dragging a shot wide of Cesar's right-hand post.

Three minutes later the Portuguese winger was again at the centre of United's attacking menace, sending a teasing cross towards Eagles at the back post. New Inter signing Christian Chivu, last seen at Old Trafford in Roma's 7-1 mauling last April, just about managed to clear under pressure.

Scares for United were few and far between in the game's opening exchanges, thanks largely to the profligacy of Ibrahimovic, who first completely missed a free header from Figo's corner before cheaply surrendering possession when Inter had three attackers against two United defenders.

Santiago Solari then powered a long-range effort straight into van der Sar's midriff, but it was United who took the lead through Rooney.

Giggs cleverly dummied Patrice Evra's low cross and, although Eagles and Chivu were both foxed, Rooney was able to control the ball and lash a low shot past Cesar and into the net, despite Walter Samuel's despairing lunge.

Parity was soon restored, however, thanks to some questionable defending from United. Luis Figo's inswinging cross wasn't cleared, despite the efforts of Evra and Vidic, and Suazo turned the ball in from close range.

A friendly it may have been, but there was a touch of controversy about Inter's second. Patrice Evra appeared to be fouled by Stankovic but play was allowed to continue, and Ibrahimovic emphatically swept home the Serbian's pull-back.

Two became three after 34 minutes as Ibrahimovic and Figo combined well again to feed Suazo, who clipped the ball neatly inside van der Sar's post.

United looked to hit back straight away, but O'Shea's long-range effort was comfortably wide of the mark.

They came far closer three minutes before the break, as Ronaldo and Carrick swapped quickfire passes to tee up Rooney, whose curling 25-yard effort narrowly missed the top corner.

Inter took advantage of their two-goal lead by introducing Adriano and Cesar at half-time, with Ibrahimovic and Materazzi making way.

The burly Brazilian striker was quickly on the scoresheet but, sadly for Roberto Mancini's side, his effort was a spectacular own goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo fizzed a left-wing free kick into the Inter area and, although none of United's attackers were on hand to convert, Adriano planted a powerful header into his own bottom corner.

The comedic value of the moment, coupled with the sense that United had a route back into the match, stirred the crowd into a buzzing fervour.

The efforts of Rooney were also instrumental in conducting the support as time and again he embarked on surging runs, only to be eventually outnumbered by the Italian defenders.

Ronaldo very nearly drew United level just after the hour mark, but Cesar did brilliantly to turn his stinging left-footed effort around the post.

Inter managed to weather the United storm for the final third of the game, but only after surviving a scare as Rio Ferdinand, unmarked from Rooney's pull-back, fired over the bar from close-range.

The Italians inflicted a rare home defeat on Sir Alex's side but, with the new season edging ever-closer, such a stern test and strenuous workout will be much appreciated by all at Old Trafford.
