Two goals by Klemen Lavric guided Slovenia to a 3-0 win over Luxembourg in Euro 2008 qualifying on Saturday.

The visitors dominated from start to finish and deservedly took the lead after seven minutes when Lavric latched on to a through ball from Milivoje Novakovic to rifle home low and hard.

Novakovic turned poacher half an hour later when he connected with a cross from Robert Koren. Lavric put the game beyond doubt with a header two minutes after the interval.

Slovenia's second victory gave them seven points from eight outings in Group G. Luxembourg are bottom without a point.

Romania, who face Belarus on Saturday, lead on 17 points from seven matches with Bulgaria two points behind in second.

Bulgaria later play third-placed Netherlands, who have 14 points from six games.

Iceland 1-1 Spain: Iniesta saves 10-man Spain

Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta scored four minutes from time to scramble a 1-1 draw with Iceland in their Euro 2008 qualifier on Saturday.

The visitors had midfielder Xabi Alonso sent off after 19 minutes and fell behind to a header by Emil Hallfredsson 20 minutes later.

Spain poured forward in search of an equaliser and were rewarded when substitute Iniesta poked the ball past keeper Arni Arason.

The result left Spain third in Group F with 16 points from eight games, level with second-placed Northern Ireland and three behind leaders Sweden.

"It was difficult with a man down but we fought hard and I think we deserved something more from the game," Spain defender Sergio Ramos told Radio Marca.

Spain started positively on a rain-swept pitch when striker David Villa forced Arason to turn a low free kick round the post in the fourth minute.

But the home side's muscular approach unsettled Spain and they were thrown further out of their stride when Alonso stamped on Arnar Vidarsson in a challenge to earn a red card.

Two minutes later Johannes Gudjonsson's shot flew just wide of Spain's post.

Luis Aragones's attacking substitution, replacing a full back with another midfielder seemed to settle the visitors but left them short at the back.

Iceland made full use of the space when Gudjonsson's cross from the right found Hallfredsson unmarked at the back post, from where he drilled a diving header low into the net.

Spain, who had won their last four qualifiers, dominated the second half and Iceland dug in and played on the break.

Iker Casillas saved well from Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson on a counter and it was late in the game when Villa's clipped through ball allowed Iniesta to squirm clear and slide the ball past the advancing keeper.

Barcelona's Iniesta scored the late winner for Spain against Iceland in Mallorca when Spain won 1-0 in March.

Sweden 0-0 Denmark: Scandinavian stalemate

Group F

Sweden0 - 0Denmark

00

Sweden drew 0-0 with Denmark on Saturday to remain top of Euro 2008 Group F qualifying.

The home team had a handful of opportunities to score, most of them in the first half, but Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen denied striker Johan Elmander and midfielders Christian Wilhelmsson and Kennedy Bakircioglu.

'With the chances we had we deserved to win,' Sweden coach Lars Lagerback told reporters. 'Sorensen made a couple of unbelievable saves.

'We're in a good position (to qualify). It would be a lie to say anything else.'

The draw gave Sweden 19 points from eight matches. Denmark have 11 points from seven.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was in sparkling form, also went close for Sweden with a low shot that went narrowly wide in the 42nd minute.

Ibrahimovic was booked for punching Denmark winger Jesper Gronkjaer in the back in the second half. The yellow card means the Inter Milan striker will be suspended for the next qualifier against Liechtenstein.

'That's unfortunate,' Lagerback said.

An own goal by defender Chris Baird handed Latvia a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland in Euro 2008 qualifying on Saturday.

Baird went to intercept a cross by Imants Bleidelis only to send the ball past his own keeper Maik Taylor in the 53rd minute.

The defeat left Northern Ireland, trying to qualify for the finals for the first time, second in the Group F table on 16 points before Saturday's later matches.

The result was likely to please third-placed Spain (15 points), who were due to face Iceland. Sweden, who were playing fourth-placed Denmark, lead the group on 18.

'It is not going to help us qualify, it was a million miles away from where we wanted to be,' Northern Ireland coach Nigel Worthington told a news conference.

'This will put more importance on the next game where we will look at getting three points.'

Northern Ireland next play Iceland in Reykjavik on Wednesday.

The own goal decided a close match, with both sides creating few opportunties although Latvia generally had the run of the game.

Northern Ireland's Jonathan Evans had one of the best chances in the 89th minute with a diving header that produced a good save from keeper Andris Vanins.

Latvia have six qualifying points while Liechtenstein and Iceland have four apiece.

Two goals from Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva secured Croatia a 2-0 victory over Estonia in Euro 2008 qualifying on Saturday.

A foul on the Brazilian-born player led to a sixth-minute penalty but Darijo Srna's effort hit the post.

Croatia piled on the pressure and had to wait until the 39th minute to break through when Eduardo scored with an overhead kick.

Eduardo then latched on to a fine pass from Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Luka Modric six minutes later to add his second goal with a superb long-range shot.

'Everything is still open in our group. We are a Formula One racer and have kept a few seconds of advantage but we have to be cautious to avoid fatal errors,' said Croatia coach Slaven Bilic.

Croatia top Group E with 20 points from eight matches, ahead of Russia (18) and England (17).

Bilic's team play Andorra on Wednesday.

Russia 3 - 0 Macedonia; Russia secure easy victory

Russia beat Macedonia 3-0 in a Euro 2008 Group E qualifier on Saturday to stay on track for next year's finals.

For that the Russians had to thank their reserve goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeyev, who saved a 70th-minute penalty from Igor Mitreski to preserve a 1-0 lead just after replacing Vladimir Gabulov.

Gabulov was sent off in the 69th minute for a professional foul on Velice Sumulikoski in his own penalty box.

Vasily Berezutsky put the home side ahead five minutes into the game, slotting the ball in at the far post following Andrei Arshavin's free kick.

Russia could easily have doubled their lead before the break but Vladimir Bystrov missed an open goal from a tight angle in the 21st minute and Macedonia keeper Petar Milosevski made a fine diving save to deny Dmitry Sychev a few minutes later.

Sychev wasted another golden chance early in the second half, shooting wide from five metres and Roman Pavlyuchenko hit tha post before Malafeyev's heroics.

Russia captain Andrei Arshavin made it 2-0 with a great solo effort in the 83rd minute and Sevilla striker Alexander Kerzhakov, a second-half substitute, made sure of the win three minutes later.

Victory moved Russia top of the group with 18 points from eight matches, a point ahead of England, who beat Israel 3-0, and Croatia, who were playing Estonia in a later match on Saturday.

Russia coach Guus Hiddink said he was pleased with the outcome but added his side were a bit lucky to escape unharmed.

'There's an unwritten law in football that says if you don't make the score 2-0 or 3-0 before halftime, you're going to have problems,' the Dutchman told a news conference.

'And we were almost punished with that penalty kick. Fortunately, Malafeyev saved the game for us.'

Wales 0-2 Germany: Klose punishes Welsh

Group D

Wales0 - 2Germany
5'0 - 1Miroslav Klose
60'0 - 2Miroslav Klose

02

Wales boss John Toshack faces plenty of soul-searching in the wake of his side's demoralising defeat in Cardiff.

Euro 2008 qualification is effectively long gone, but with Toshack trying to integrate a string of young players into the tough world of international football, he did not expect limp, uninspired displays from his senior men.

Toshack refused to point the finger after seeing Miroslav Klose score a goal in each half, allowing Germany to cruise to another Group D victory to put them within touching distance of qualification.

Toshack has a totally different agenda, trying to build a bright young side for the future.

What he did not need was insipid displays from the likes of Jason Koumas, Carl Robinson and, to a far lesser extent, the hard-working Simon Davies.

Ahead of this Millennium Stadium showdown, Toshack had even suggested Koumas could eventually show the creative quality to replace the retired Ryan Giggs.

But Koumas was taken off after 67 minutes of painful under-achievement. The Wigan man marched straight down the tunnel, so upset was he with his own display.

Without skipper Craig Bellamy - clearly not fit for action after 48 hours at his sick baby daughter's hospital bedside - Wales had no attacking end product, nobody to run defenders and force them out of snooze control.

Toshack refused to defend Koumas, not the only offender in an over-run midfield, saying: 'Jason was not injured when he came off, I know he went straight up the tunnel but players handle that sort of thing in different ways.

'Simon Davies just sat on the ground behind me, others just sit on the bench. I have other things to worry about than what is going on behind me.

'Jason usually plays on the left, but because of what happened with us losing Bellamy I decided to push him into the centre more. We were not able to work on it at all in training, we had little choice.

'Maybe Jason is more comfortable on the left and shifting inside to support Freddy Eastwood, who without Bellamy played on his own up front, was not the best option and did not suit Jason.

'But what we have to do now is to look for the experienced players to step up and take responsibility now Ryan Giggs has retired.

'But this system has worked. We did very well against the Czechs, another strong side, and won in Bulgaria. We were given a lot of encouragement, but the frustrating thing is that things didn't show up as well this time.

'Even when we lost badly to Slovakia, a 5-1 defeat when we actually played pretty well at times, there was plenty of positives to work on. I can't say that about losing to Germany. It just did not happen.

'The early goal against us was a terrible start. We had problems in central midfield from the start and never got to grips there.'

He added: 'We lost the ball too often, that caused the first goal and it was a bad one to give away. It put a lot of pressure on people at the wrong time, and even their second goal was a poor mistake.

'The Germans were far, far stronger than we were. They were much fitter and I just could not see us getting back into it, and in the end I was more concerned about protecting the health and fitness of some of my players than getting a result.'

For Toshack, these problems of limited experience and in some cases ability, are hard to overcome as promising young players have to learn hard lessons on the most demanding stage.

Toshack said: 'For our young players to face the World Cup semi-finalists is a tall order. We have to be realistic about things like this.

'And even our experienced players were coming at this one with problems. Danny Gabbidon and James Collins have not played league football this season, Gareth Bale has only had a couple of games due to injury and Sam Ricketts has not played a match since our win in Bulgaria last month.

'But I was disappointed with some aspects of the game. I felt that some of our experienced lads could have done better.

'But we are confronting continual problems. We have seen more players retire, Ryan Giggs and Mark Delaney, while losing Craig Bellamy like we did a few hours before the game because of his family problems hit us hard.

'We had five under-2121 players on the pitch, and all that adds up to a big task.

'But we didn't get as much out of the game as we should have. Even in losing you hope to find some plus points to work on, but not from this one.'

A late strike from Marek Cech gave Slovakia a deserved 2-2 draw against Ireland in their Euro 2008 Group D qualifier on Saturday.

Ireland's Kevin Doyle and Stephen Ireland capitalised on defensive blunders to twice put the visiting team ahead but the Slovaks, who lost 1-0 in the March encounter in Dublin, managed to come back.

The Irish had a bright start, shocking the Slovaks seven minutes into the game when the unmarked Ireland scored from a left-wing cross from Kevin Kilbane.

The hosts struck back in the 37th minute when Maros Klimpl beat Ireland keeper Shay Given with a close-range header after a headed cross from defender Jan Durica.

Midfielder Ireland was close to adding the second goal shortly after the interval but Slovak keeper Stefan Senecky palmed out his powerful shot.

Stand-in Slovak captain Marek Mintal threatened only minutes later, heading a right-wing cross just wide of Given's net from short range.

The visiting team pulled away again when a long shot by Doyle hit the upper left corner of Senecky's net, giving him no chance.

Defender Cech salvaged a point for Slovakia one minute into stoppage time, rifling in a ball deflected by Irish defender Richard Dunne.

Slovakia are fourth in the Group D standings with 10 points, four points behind third-placed Ireland. Germany top the group with 22 points, five clear of the Czech Republic.

San Marino 0-3 Czech Republic: Rosicky runs riot

Group D

75'0 - 2Marek Jankulovski
90'0 - 3Jan Koller

03

Goals by Tomas Rosicky, Marek Jankulovski and Jan Koller steered the Czech Republic to an easy 3-0 victory over 10-man San Marino in their Euro 2008 Group D qualifier on Saturday.

Having already beaten winless San Marino 7-0 at home in October, the Czechs came into the game looking for another goal feast.

Instead, their attack continued to sputter for most of the match as they scored two or more goals in a qualifier for the first time this year.

Rosicky provided the opener in the 32nd minute when Marek Kulic's weak shot was only parried by goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini and the Arsenal midfielder headed into an open goal.

San Marino's Alessandro Della Valle picked up his second yellow card in the 63rd minute, giving the Czechs even more room to operate.

AC Milan's Jankulovski blasted home a low drive from a free kick in the 75th minute to extend the lead before Koller headed home his 51st international goal in extra time.
