EPL Result: West Ham 0-1 Arsenal

West Ham0 - 1Arsenal

0 - 1Robin Van Persie

Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal maintained their superb start to the season with a hard-earned 1-0 win at West Ham.

Robin van Persie's close-range header on 13 minutes proved enough for an eighth straight victory.

West Ham, though, had their chances - the best of which fell to England hopeful Dean Ashton - but they also were indebted to keeper Rob Green, who made a string a fine saves.

The Hammers have performed well against Arsenal in recent meetings - winning both games last season as they escaped the drop. However, the Gunners are currently in blistering form and again started brightly.

Inside the opening two minutes Arsenal broke quickly down the left, with Abou Diaby cutting the ball back to Emmanuel Adebayor, who drilled a low shot just wide from 15 yards.

West Ham, though, soon rallied and former Gunner Freddie Ljungberg was unfortunate to be flagged offside when collecting a quick backheel from Ashton on the edge of the Arsenal box.

The England hopeful was then sent clear himself, only to again be called up by the referee's assistant on the far side.

Ashton was leading the West Ham line with plenty of aggression, and turned to drill a 20-yard shot just over.

Arsenal, though, were ahead on 13 minutes.

Adebayor held the ball up well on the right side of the area and fed a pass out to Alexander Hleb.

His centre flew across the six-yard box, where van Persie arrived on queue at the far post to glance a header past Green, who was at full stretch and could only push the ball onto the post and in.

The goal silenced the home crowd, and after such a positive start the Hammers suddenly looked disjointed.

As the half-hour approached, West Ham were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men following an X-rated challenge by Mark Noble on Hleb.

The Belarus midfielder, just back from a knee problem, had to be carried off with what looked like a similar injury and was replaced by Emmanuel Eboue.

Arsenal were incensed, but referee Alan Wiley deemed a yellow card sufficient punishment.

West Ham continued to try to take the match to Arsenal, but the visitors were playing with a high defensive line and used the offside trap well.

When the hosts did get in behind, they could not find a telling cross into the danger zone.

At the other end, Lee Bowyer was penalised for handball just outside the area on the right.

Van Persie struck his effort goalwards, which Green palmed behind.

Mathieu Flamini tried his luck with a low, 20-yard strike which the West Ham keeper got down well to stop.

The hosts replaced Scott Parker, who looked to have picked up a knock, at the restart and were then quickly forced into another change when Anton Ferdinand hobbled off and Danny Gabbidon came on.

Van Persie came within inches of putting the visitors 2-0 ahead on 54 minutes.

The Dutchman side-stepped marker Gabbidon on the edge of the area, and drilled his shot towards the top left-hand corner.

Green was again at full stretch and got his fingertips to the ball, which this time bounced back off the post and away.

Moments later it should have been 1-1 after Bowyer chipped the ball into the area from the right.

Ashton had timed his run perfectly to get a free header at the back post, only to then nod it straight at a grateful Manuel Almunia.

This was a good spell for West Ham. Ljungberg did get the ball into the net when he collected Henri Camara's slide pass - but was flagged offside in what looked a marginal call.

However, Arsenal were dangerous on the break.

Van Persie and Adebayor exchanged passes on the edge of the West Ham box, which sent the Togo striker clear and Green came to the rescue with a fine reaction save low to his left.

Arsenal full-back Gael Clichy was the next man to force a good save from Green, the England international again at full stretch to turn the ball behind.

The Gunners made a change with 12 minutes left when Gilberto replaced Adebayor, who looked to have a dead leg, before Green once more pushed a goal-bound strike behind, this time from Flamini.

Van Persie booted a downward header from Ashton clear in front of his own net as the Gunners closed out the match - including four minutes of stoppage time - to stay ahead of the chasing pack.

Carling Cup Result: Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle: First for Bendtner

Arsenal2 - 0Newcastle

89'Neves Denilson2 - 0

Arsenal's next generation showed the future is bright as a bullet header from Nicklas Bendtner and a superb strike by Brazilian Denilson beat Newcastle 2-0 at Emirates Stadium.

Manager Arsene Wenger had put his faith in youth for the third-round Carling Cup tie, and last season's losing finalists showed they have both the hunger and undoubted talent in depth to make another strong run in the competition.

After dominating for long spells, the breakthrough eventually came when Bendtner powered in his first senior Arsenal goal on 83 minutes from Armand Traore's deep cross.

Captain Philippe Senderos had to clear off the line - but Denilson made sure of the result with a fine 20-yard strike.

Few sides will now fancy meeting the young Gunners in the fourth round and with Arsenal currently top of the Premier League, the foundations are in place for what could be a vintage season to remember.

Arsenal had severely reduced ticket prices to ensure a bumper attendance for the game.

However, there were plenty of empty seats once the action got under way, which was not surprising given the pre-match travel problems around north London on the Underground.

The hosts started brightly, with Eduardo - the Croatian international signed during the summer - causing problems down the right.

It was, though, Newcastle who created the first decent opening on 10 minutes, Sanchez Jose Enrique sent over a deep cross from the left towards the far post.

Obafemi Martins got up above the defence and headed the ball downwards, but Pole Lukasz Fabianski - on his debut - produced a fine low reaction save.

Arsenal slowly started to build some pressure and the hosts could have gone ahead on 17 minutes.

Full-back Traore got away down the Arsenal left and sent over a deep cross towards the penalty spot.

Bendtner, under pressure from David Rozehnal, got plenty of power on his header but could not keep the ball down and it flew high over the bar.

Emmanuel Eboue chipped the ball all the way across the six-yard area from the right but Eduardo was just unable to turn it in at the far post.

The Croatian was then clean through after he pushed a long pass ahead of him.

However, Newcastle keeper Shay Given showed his experience to quickly close down the Arsenal striker on the edge of the area and the loose ball was cleared.

On 37 minutes, Eboue sent in a low drive from 20 yards, which Given did well to palm away. Arsenal again pressed following the restart.

A quick move down the right saw Bendtner cut the ball back to Eboue, who made space for an angled drive, which Given put behind.

The veteran Republic of Ireland man then showed more good reflexes to deny Walcott from close range.

Fit-again Eboue - converted from right-back to midfield this season - was looking lively, and it took a saving block from Steven Taylor to deny the Ivory Coast man inside the six-yard box on 55 minutes.

From the resulting corner, Charles N'Zogbia was in just the right place to clear Eduardo's goal-bound looping header off the line.

Given was having a busy night, as he turned over a left-wing cross from Walcott which suddenly swerved goalwards.

Newcastle felt they had a penalty shout when Martins tumbled under a challenge from Senderos, but referee Howard Webb was not impressed.

Bendtner and Eduardo exchanged neat passes on the edge of the area, but after chesting the ball down, the Croatian scuffed his volley wide.

The Dane then looked to have won it for Arsenal when he powered in a bullet header from Traore's left-wing cross on 83 minutes.

However, there was still time for Senderos to heroically clear off the line after Martins had rounded Fabianski.

The result was then put beyond any doubt when Denilson rifled in a superb 20-yard effort with a minute to go.

Result: Arsenal 5-0 Derby: Hat-trick hero Adebayor

Arsenal remain top of the Premier League after their five-star performance destroyed dire Derby 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

A hat-trick from Emmanuel Adebayor and goals from Abou Diaby and Cesc Fabregas swept clueless County aside in emphatic style.

The Londoners are clearly not missing the departed Thierry Henry as this latest victory preserved their 100% home record and left them undefeated so far this season.

Arsenal should have taken the lead in the fourth minute of the game after a superb run down the left flank from Gael Clichy.

The left-back's low cross found Adebayor unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box, but the tall striker failed to direct his effort on target.

However, the Gunners took the lead in the 10th minute when Diaby side-stepped two challenges on the edge of the penalty area before firing an unstoppable rising drive into the top corner of the net.

He almost repeated the feat moments later, but this time his low drive from a similar position was pushed to safety by Stephen Bywater.

Arsenal's free-flowing football was a joy to watch and Derby were finding it difficult to hold the hosts at bay.

Derby offered little in the way of an attacking threat under Arsenal's domination of the game.

In the 23rd minute Arsenal almost opened up the Rams for a second time when Adebayor got on the end of a long ball from Kolo Toure.

But again the tall striker could not get a firm strike on the ball and it was collected easily by Bywater.

The home side looked dangerous with every attack and the Premier League newcomers struggled to cope with the pace of the game.

Adebayor made it two to Arsenal in the 25th minute when he latched onto a pass from Fabregas and ran clear of the Derby defence. The Arsenal striker then rounded Bywater and slotted the ball home.

Derby, hammered 6-0 by Liverpool earlier this month, were seemingly out of their depth yet again.

Adebayor was a constant threat and in the 35th minute he almost turned provider for Eduardo.

This time his cross was just too far for the Arsenal striker to control and the chance went begging.

Moments later Theo Walcott tried his luck from 20 yards, but his accuracy and power did not match that of team-mate Diaby and the ball went wide of the target by some margin.

Fabregas was controlling the midfield and in the 32nd minute he put Walcott through on goal, but the England youngster fired straight at Bywater, who managed to grab the ball at the second attempt.

Derby's attempts to get back into the game were hampered by their own inability to pass the ball to their own players.

Their sloppy play allowed Arsenal to quickly regain possession and cause County further problems.

In the 44th minute Eduardo's header from a corner by Fabregas was brilliantly saved by Bywater.

The half-time whistle gave the visitors some much-needed relief after a first half dominated by Wenger's team.

Derby's plight worsened four minutes after the re-start when County captain Matt Oakley was punished for pulling back Eduardo inside the penalty area by referee Martin Atkinson.

Adebayor stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no mistake for his second goal of the game.

In the 56th minute a surging run by Toure almost brought him a goal. The Arsenal captain started the move with a clever pass to Fabregas and when the midfielder crossed the ball into the middle, it was headed just wide by the advancing Toure.

Derby had their first real effort of the game on the hour when a shot from centre-forward Steve Howard whistled past the post.

Walcott almost created a goal out of nothing when he beat two Derby players during a mazy run into the penalty area, but his final shot was blocked.

In the 68th minute another fine Arsenal move ended with Adebayor heading over the crossbar after Sagna's cross had found him on the edge of the six-yard box.

With 20 minutes remaining Fabregas scored Arsenal's fourth with a crisp right-foot drive from 20 yards - it was just reward for a tremendous midfield performance.

But the rout was not over and Adebayor made sure of his treble in the 80th minute. The tall striker chested down a long ball and kept his composure before sidefooting home from eight yards to cap a glorious afternoon for Wenger's men.

UCL: Arsenal 3-0 FC Sevilla: Convincing start for Gunners

90'Eduardo3 - 0

Arsenal continued to show few signs of missing Thierry Henry as Arsene Wenger's young Gunners swept aside Sevilla 3-0 to get their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start at the Emirates Stadium.

Star man Henry may have been sold to Barcelona during the summer but the rest of the squad have certainly pulled together, racing to the top of the Premier League with four wins from five games.

And it was another composed and collected display to see off the challenge of the Spanish side, coached by Tottenham target Juande Ramos, which was supposed to be the toughest of Group H.

An own goal from Julien Escude, deflecting in Cesc Fabregas' shot on 27 minutes, set the Gunners on their way, with Robin van Persie doubling the hosts' lead after the break and substitute Eduardo adding a third in stoppage time.

With the visit of Premier League whipping boys Derby to come on Saturday, Wenger's ``gamble'' in facing up to life with without Henry looks, for now, to have been a bet worth taking.

There was plenty of vocal support from the home crowd, Emirates Stadium packed close to its 60,000 capacity - more than can be said for Stamford Bridge across in west London on Tuesday.

After Jesus Navas had drilled a 20-yard strike only inches over the crossbar, Arsenal slowly upped the tempo.

Van Persie stung the hands of Andres Palop with a fierce drive from the edge of the box after skipping a couple of agricultural challenges from the Sevilla defence.

On 15 minutes, Emmanuel Adebayor slid in as the Sevilla goalkeeper then spilled a low strike from Mathieu Flamini, but the beanpole Togo striker was penalised by the Swedish referee for dangerous play.

Tomas Rosicky gave away a free-kick near the left corner to hand Sevilla a chance to attack the Arsenal goal from a set-piece on 21 minutes.

However, the delivery from one-time Chelsea target Daniel Alves was appalling, sent over into no man's land on the far side and out of play.

The Gunners snatched the lead on 27 minutes.

Fabregas picked the ball up around 22 yards out on the right of the penalty arc and fired in a well-hit shot across the area.

The ball then took a wicked deflection off Escude and flew past the wrong-footed Palop into the opposite corner.

They all count, though, as Fabregas wheeled away to celebrate what he hopes will eventually be credited as a sixth goal of the season.

The Gunners were on top now.

Kolo Toure headed across goal from a corner as the home side looked for a second before half-time.

Arsenal created another decent opening when Adebayor cut in from the left and charged towards the penalty spot.

Having done the hard work, the lanky African then managed to somehow spoon his shot horribly wide.

At the other end, Gunners goalkeeper Manuel Almunia - with little to do so far - had to be alert to beat away an angled drive from Fredi Kanoute.

Arsenal were forced into a change early in the second half when Rosicky went off with what looked like another injury problem for the Czech midfielder, and he was replaced by Abou Diaby.

As the hour mark approached, Arsenal were awarded a free-kick on the left when Alves bundled over Flamini.

The delivery from Fabregas into the six-yard box was flicked on by Bacary Sagna - and Van Persie arrived on cue at the far post to smash the ball home from close range.

With the points now all but safe, Arsenal were able to relax somewhat, yet still needed to be alert to the quick counter-attacks from the Spaniards.

Former Spurs man Kanoute was roundly booed by sections of the home fans when he was on the ball, but it was his run down the right which resulted in a scramble in the Arsenal six-yard box which could easily have been put away.

Arsenal - Champions League finalists in 2006 - just needed to retain focus for the closing stages to ensure a perfect start to their European campaign.

Adebayor flashed a diving header just wide of the far post following a determined run and cross from Sagna down the right.

In stoppage time, substitute Eduardo - the man bought following the sale of Henry - swept home from close range after a neat exchange between Alexander Hleb and Fabregas.

However, Arsenal had already done more than enough to deserve another comfortable victory of what has been an impressive, and perhaps ominous, start to a campaign which was supposed to offer little chance of success without their departed talisman.

UCL: Arsenal v FC Sevilla: Preview

19:45 UKArsenal - FC Sevilla

Manager Arsene Wenger maintained it was business as usual today ahead of Arsenal's Champions League clash with Sevilla despite the news Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov has increased his shareholding in the club.

The purchase - which was announced this morning to the Stock Exchange - makes Usmanov's investment company, Red and White Holdings Limited, the club's second-highest shareholder behind Danny Fiszman.

Despite the continued speculation, this latest move is likely to lead to a formal takeover and the possible return of former vice-chairman David Dein, who left the club last season after a rift with the board over the role of American investor Stan Kroenke, the Gunners boss insists nothing has changed in terms of his day-to-day job.

``I am responsible for the results at the club and not for the rest,'' said Wenger, who earlier this month agreed a new three-year deal with Arsenal.

``People will buy and sell shares or not want to sell shares only if a club is doing well.

``My job is to make sure the club does well.''

Wenger insisted: ``I am not concerned about a Russian takeover I am concerned about tomorrow's game. It will not disrupt anything.

``As we said many times, the shares are 50% inside the board and 50% outside the board. That will not change anything.''

Wenger has an excellent working relationship with the current board, which proved pivotal in his decision to stay at the club he has transformed over the past decade.

The Arsenal manager sees no reason to believe that will change.

``What is important to me is that the board have faith in me and let me to work like I want to work, support me when I want support and give the feeling to the outside that there is unity inside,'' said the Frenchman.

``It difficult to be successful when everyone is successful there is no good harmony any more it is very difficult.

``I try to do my job well. I have continued because I had support inside the club.''

Usmanov, who formed Red and White Holdings Limited alongside fellow investor Farhad Moshiri specifically to hold equity in the north London club, first bought into Arsenal when he paid Dein around £75million for his 14.65% holding in August and Dein - a close ally of Wenger when on the board - has been installed as the company's chairman.

The announcement Red and White Holdings have upped their stake to 21% prompted suggestions Dein was soon set for a dramatic return to Emirates Stadium.

But Despite all of the uncertainty off the pitch, the Gunners have made a superb start to the new campaign as Wenger's young side sit top of the Premier League table with four wins and a draw from their five matches after Saturday's 3-1 triumph at arch-rivals Tottenham.

Defender Kolo Toure insists the coaching staff and players do not concern themselves with any power struggle in the board room.

He said: ``In the dressing room we just enjoy talking about the games because we know the most important thing for the club is to win games.

``When the club wins games, everything is fine. At the moment we are really focused on the game and do not listen what is said around the club.''

Premier League: Gunners pile on Jol misery

Two stunning long-range strikes from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor saw Arsenal brush aside north London rivals Tottenham 3-1 at White Hart Lane to go top of the Barclays Premier League.

A trademark free-kick from Spurs' teenage star Gareth Bale gave the hosts the lead after 15 minutes before Adebayor equalised after 65 minutes.

Both sides had plenty of chances in a free-flowing derby but Fabregas continued his fine goalscoring record this season by drilling home a powerful drive from 30 yards.

That seemed to have sealed Tottenham's fate - and heaped more pressure on manager Martin Jol - but Adebayor's injury-time effort, a thunderous volley on the turn put daylight between the sides.

Manchester United had earlier briefly gone level on points with Liverpool at the top of the table but needed Nemanja Vidic to score a late winner against Everton at Goodison Park.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side, who have yet to show the form which saw them wrest the title from Chelsea last year, were heading for a goalless draw when the Serbian centre-half climbed highest to meet Nani's corner and break the deadlock.

That goal, in the 83rd minute, sealed the points but was unlucky on an Everton side who could have taken the lead when Andrew Johnson saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line by Paul Scholes.

The former England midfielder had earlier gone close but missed with a volley from 10 yards.

Liverpool, who lead United on goal difference, could not match their all-action display against Derby last time out and instead stuttered to a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.

Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel all started on the bench as Reds boss Rafael Benitez shuffled his pack.

Andriy Voronin went closer than anybody else, striking the crossbar with an opportunistic volley while Jose Reina saved his side at the other end, beating away Kanu's first-half penalty.

West Ham launched a second-half onslaught to condemn Middlesbrough to a 3-0 defeat at Upton Park.

Lee Bowyer's fine volley opened the scoring after 46 minutes after good approach work from Carlton Cole, who was a first-half replacement for the injured Craig Bellamy.

Cole then had a hand in the second, an unfortunate own goal from Luke Young who turned his cross past his own goalkeeper.

Dean Ashton then claimed his first goal since recovering from a punishing series of injuries which kept him out for the whole of last season.

Tuncay Sanli, on for the injured Jeremie Aliadiere, was unlucky to see his deft chip hit the woodwork but Boro were well beaten.

Clint Dempsey gave Fulham a half-time lead over Wigan at the JJB Stadium but Jason Koumas' penalty 10 minutes from time saw it finish 1-1.

Dempsey pounced in the 11th minute, turning the ball home left-footed from 12 yards but more worrying for the Latics was the sight of recalled England striker Emile Heskey limping from the pitch.

Hameur Bouazza was penalised for an 80th-minute foul on Mario Melchiot, allowing Koumas to equalise from 12 yards.

At the Stadium of Light, £5million signing Kenwyne Jones started to repay his transfer fee with one goal and one assist in the 2-1 win over Reading.

The former Southampton man gave the Black Cats the lead in the first period when he cut inside his man before smashing the ball left-footed past Marcus Hahnemann.

He started the second half just as brightly, playing in Ross Wallace 90 seconds after the restart and allowing the Scot to slot home before Dave Kitson headed the Royals' consolation.

Sunderland's fellow Premier League newcomers Birmingham also earned three points against strugglers Bolton.

Olivier Kapo grabbed his second of the season when he turned home Sebastien Larsson's teasing cross after 37 minutes, with the Swede later hitting the bar with a curling free-kick from the edge of the box.

Chelsea were made to settle for a point against Blackburn after a second half `goal' was controversially ruled out by referee Howard Webb. Chelsea looked to have sealed all three points when Salomon Kalou converted a cross from Juliano Belletti but Webb disallowed the goal for offside.

Chelsea had squandered a host of first-half chances but Blackburn, who lost defender Christopher Samba late in the game with a serious head injury, could have stolen the points if Petr Cech had not tipped Robbie Savage's late effort over the crossbar.

Stunning goals from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor earned Arsenal a 3-1 victory at White Hart Lane and piled on the misery for Tottenham manager Martin Jol.

Spurs had been ahead in the 15th minute through Gareth Bale's free-kick and had chances to add to their lead before Adebayor levelled.

Fabregas' strike came with 10 minutes remaining, and Adebayor also found the top corner in stoppage time, leaving Spurs with still one Premier League victory this season.

It was a cruel blow for Jol, who has appeared undermined by his board this season after their infamous meeting with Sevilla coach Juande Ramos.

Spurs had not beaten Arsenal since 1999, during George Graham's reign, and there is a perception Jol struggles against the ``big four''.

It looked like business as usual when Paul Robinson was required to tip over Adebayor's volley from 25 yards in the early stages.

But Dimitar Berbatov was offering a threat for the hosts and he looped a header over the crossbar before getting fouled in the lead up to Bale's opener.

Bale's free-kicks at the start of last season helped him establish himself as one of the brightest talents around and his set-piece in the 15th minute was an example of his accuracy.

He curled the effort behind Arsenal's wall and inside Manuel Almunia's near post, leaving the peroxide Spaniard fuming with himself.

The 18-year-old, with two goals in his first three Spurs matches, was playing on the left of midfield to give Jol's side balance - but he was also needed to defend as Arsenal attempted to drag themselves level.

Adebayor immediately threatened at the other end after the opener, with Robinson required to turn his volley around the post.

The England goalkeeper was needed again in the 25th minute when Fabregas broke from the centre of midfield, with Alexander Hleb eventually having the shot and Robin van Persie firing the rebound across the face of goal.

Abou Diaby then had an effort from long distance on the half-hour mark and got even closer two minutes later when Hleb found him free overlapping. Diaby beat Robinson with his powerful effort, but it smacked off the crossbar to safety.

With both sides attacking, possession switched frequently and tackles flew in, Jermaine Jenas picking up a yellow card for one of them on Van Persie.

Pascal Chimbonda was fouled in stoppage time but was booked himself for urging referee Mark Clattenburg to show his opponent a yellow card.

As expected, Spurs were forced to defend early in the second half, although Berbatov should have added a second goal in the 51st minute.

Steed Malbranque slipped the Bulgaria striker through and he rounded Almunia but could not do the same to Kolo Toure, who was the last defender.

Adebayor fired over the crossbar in Arsenal's next move after Bacary Sagna raced down the right and cut the ball back. The Togo striker then tried to take it around Robinson, but the goalkeeper timed his dive to perfection.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger brought Tomas Rosicky on for Diaby to give his side another attacking dimension.

Yet Spurs were still threatening a second goal, with Younes Kaboul heading over and Tom Huddlestone cracking a trademark volley wide from Chimbonda's cross.

The England Under-21 midfielder had angered Sagna in that move and the Arsenal defender tripped him after 62 minutes to earn a booking.

Jol has been frustrated with Spurs' defending from set-pieces this season and a free-kick was their undoing again, with Arsenal levelling in the 65th minute.

Adebayor nipped ahead of Robinson to meet Fabregas' free-kick after Malbranque had fouled Mathieu Flamini.

Spurs' response was to bring on Aaron Lennon for his first appearance since knee surgery in the summer.

Robbie Keane raced through and had an effort saved by Almunia, although the linesman had initially flagged before play was allowed to continue.

Berbatov had two bites at Jenas' corner, but Gael Clichy cleared off the line.

Fabregas then got his stunning goal, receiving the pass from Rosicky before taking aim from 30 yards and bending into the top corner with the outside of his boot.

Darren Bent came on and was sent through, but the striker missed his kick.

Adebayor made him pay with a volleyed goal in stoppage time to add to Spurs' misery.

Returning Bent aims to make derby impact

Tottenham striker Darren Bent is determined to make an impression against Arsenal on Saturday after recovering from his thigh injury.

The 23-year-old scored against Derby last month but has been on the sidelines since, with Spurs dropping points against Manchester United and Fulham.

'It's not ideal to be injured and I've missed a couple of vital games but I'm back in training, I'm buzzing and I can't wait to get going again,' he said.

'The injury was a blow. I've missed United, Fulham and the England games. It was a thigh strain that turned into a tear but I'm clear of it now and can't wait to get going again.

'I managed to score against Derby and that meant a lot but all of a sudden I was out injured. As I said, it wasn't ideal but I'm fighting fit now and raring to go.'

Spurs manager Martin Jol could also have Aaron Lennon back after the winger's knee surgery in the summer.

Michael Dawson has played for the reserves during the international break, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Anthony Gardner have been back in training after injuries.

Players in the treatment room have contributed to Spurs' dismal start to the Premier League season, with Jol's position appearing uncertain after Spurs officials met Sevilla coach Juande Ramos.

The clash against rivals Arsenal at the weekend offers a chance for Spurs to kick-start their season.

'Our confidence is always high, we are a family all together and that is important because you always want the best things for your family,' said defender Ricardo Rocha.

'The best is winning and going forward - that is what we want.'

Arsenal don't need a billionaire backer - Hill-Wood

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood insists suggestions the club need a billionaire backer are 'lunacy'.

There has been much speculation the Gunners are ripe for a takeover, with the likes of Alisher Usmanov and Stan Kroenke having already taken a considerable stakeholding in Arsenal's parent company.

Former Gunners vice-chairman David Dein - who controversially left the club in April - long held the opinion that the Gunners needed major foreign investment in order to compete with their Premier League rivals like Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, who all have international backing.

But Hill-Wood insists Arsenal's sensible financial policy will work in their favour.

He said: 'We have always run Arsenal as a business and kept within reasonable bounds.

'All this nonsense about needing a billionaire to put a whole lot of money in to help shore up the annual deficit is not going to happen - it is lunacy.'

Hill-Wood told BBC Sport: 'I have no objection to foreign investors coming into the Premier League, it's going to be beneficial.

'Most of them are investment people and they are not buying into clubs because they have the passion for the local team they have supported since they were two years old.

'They think that football and the Premier League is an attractive investment and they want a return on that.

'That will work in our favour. There will be a more sensible attitude in transfer fees at silly levels and all this sort of thing.

'People putting £100million in are going to want to see how they can make a profit. To go on paying more to players is not justified or sensible.'

Hill-Wood maintains the board have no intention of selling any more shares in the club - but would listen to any 'sensible proposals' from the likes of Usmanov and Kroenke.

There has been uncertainty surrounding the direction of the club following the high-profile departure of Dein and sale of captain Thierry Henry to Barcelona, although speculation surrounding Arsene Wenger's future was finally concluded last week when the Frenchman signed a new three-year deal with the club.

Dein left the Gunners board following a disagreement over plans to bring investment from Kroenke - who owns a 12.2% stake in the club - to the Emirates Stadium.

Last week Dein sold his 14.58% stake for £75million to Red and White Holdings Ltd - a company co-owned by Russian tycoon Usmanov and business partner Farhad Moshiri that has pledged to buy shares in the club - and was then appointed its chairman, fuelling talk of a forthcoming takeover.

But while Hill-Wood admits Arsenal, who release their financial figures for the year later this month, would be prepared to listen to what interested parties may have to say, he insists the board have no plans to sell.

'The major shareholders have no intention of selling and wouldn't welcome an offer,' he said.

'We will have a dialogue with any principal or major shareholder. If they have got some sensible proposals we will listen to them.'

Arsenal 3-1 Portsmouth: Ten-man Arsenal sink Pompey

David James damaged his hopes of resurrecting his England career by gifting Arsenal a first-half penalty as Portsmouth were beaten 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Pompey keeper, hoping to take advantage of Paul Robinson's collapse in form, brought down Robin van Persie in the seventh minute and referee Mark Halsey was left with an easy decision.

England face Israel in a pivotal Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley on Saturday and James' blunder may have settled Steve McClaren's selection dilemma in Robinson's favour.

Adebayor converted the spot kick to send Arsenal into a lead they never relinquished as Arsene Wenger's side cantered to their third Barclays Premier League win of the season.

Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky completed the rout with second-half strikes and the only cloud over an scintillating display was the 50th minute dismissal of Philippe Senderos.

Senderos was shown a straight red card for blocking Kanu and 12 minutes later the former Arsenal striker pulled one back for Portsmouth with a lucky backheel.

Former Gunners vice-chairman David Dein may have warned the club they need a ``huge injection of money'' if they are to not to get left behind, but Pompey will beg to differ.

Dein could soon be fronting a takeover funded by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov but Wenger's claims he does not need outside investment to make Arsenal competitive were given credibility this afternoon.

Apart from Kanu's strike, Portsmouth scarcely troubled the Gunners' defence and it would have been 4-1 had substitute Abou Diaby not missed a late sitter.

Instead Arsenal dominated throughout, inflicting a harrowing afternoon upon Lauren who was making his first appearance against his former club.

Glen Johnson started for the visitors after completing a £4million transfer deadline day move from Chelsea and the England defender was involved as Arsenal attacked from the opening whistle.

Fabregas attempted to send van Persie into space with a threaded pass but Sean Davis read the danger and bundled the Dutch striker off the ball.

But van Persie was alive to a more promising chance in the seventh minute, pouncing on an error from John Utaka - forced by pressure from Gael Clichy - and beating James in a foot race to the ball.

Van Persie's advance was halted when James sent him tumbling for a clear penalty and Adebayor sent the England keeper the wrong way by tapping the spot kick into the right corner.

Adebayor almost made it two shortly after when Alexander Hleb had whipped in a dangerous cross but he just failed to connect as James came out in the nick of time.

Fabregas was heavily involved as Arsenal broke from their own half in the 31st minute with Clichy probing down the left.

The French defender whipped in a cross that sailed just inches over the head of van Persie and Portsmouth escaped the danger.

But Arsenal could not be denied in the 36th minute when a corner by Rosicky caused havoc in the opposition defence.

Gilberto got the initial touch and the ball fell between Fabregas and Davis with the Spaniard reacting first, turning and shooting to leave James no chance from such close range.

A marauding run from Adebayor brought the home fans to their feet but his final delivery was poor and the move ground to a halt.

Pompey's frustration was growing and Hermann Hreidarsson was justifiably booked for a blatant body check on Hleb as the winger attempted to escape into space.

Arsenal began the second half as they had finished the first, pouring forward and placing the Pompey goal under pressure.

Van Persie just failed to meet a cross from Adebayor and then Senderos' acrobatic header was denied by a smart save from James.

The Swiss defender was left to rue James' reactions as a heartbeat later he was given his marching orders for obstructing Kanu as the former Gunner raced in on goal.

Halsey brandished the red card in the belief Senderos was the last defender but replays showed Kolo Toure was covering across and could have stopped Kanu.

The powerfully-struck free-kick, taken by Utaka, curled around the wall but failed to trouble keeper Manuel Almunia.

Portsmouth were now attacking with more conviction and Gilberto had to come to the rescue as Kanu pulled the trigger.

But just as Harry Redknapp's side appeared capable of pulling a goal back, Arsenal struck for a third time.

Fabregas took a quick free-kick to Rosicky and the Czech winger blasted his shot between James and Johnson from an acute angle.

Pompey finally made the breakthrough in the 62nd minute, although it was a little fortuitous as Kanu's backheel from a Utaka cross ricocheted off his own legs past Almunia.

Arsenal should have made it four but Diaby sent his seven-yard header wide when it was harder to miss and then Johnson had a long-range shot well saved by Almunia.

David Nugent was denied by Toure as Pompey finished with a flourish but Arsenal were already out of sight.

Arsenal sign Diarra from Chelsea

Arsenal, West Ham and Newcastle left it late to beat the transfer deadline and make last-minute signings on Friday night.

Arsenal have signed France international midfielder Lassana Diarra from Chelsea on a 'long-term contract' for an undisclosed fee.

West Ham confirmed they signed Henri Camara from Wigan and Nolberto Solano from Newcastle, while the Magpies beat the transfer deadline to complete the signings of Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye.

Versatile 22-year-old Diarra had found first-team opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge and told the club's website, arsenal.com: 'I have great respect for the manager Arsene Wenger and am attracted by the style of football that the team plays.

'Of course I am excited by what the future holds and keen to play my part in helping Arsenal fight for trophies this season and for years to come.'

Striker Camara has signed on a season-long loan at Upton Park while Solano joins on a one-year contract with the option of another year.

Neither signed in time to play for the Hammers against Reading today.

Defensive pair Beye and Faye had been expected to make the move to St James' Park but left it late to confirm their three-year deals.

Middlesbrough overcame a late complication to complete the £5million signing of Gary O'Neil from Portsmouth less than an hour before the transfer deadline.

The 24-year-old underwent a medical on Teesside after the two clubs agreed a £5million fee.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate told Sky Sports: 'We've just completed the deal, we've very pleased and I'm looking forward to getting home to bed!'

Southgate was also able to complete the signing of Mohamed Shawky from Egyptian side Al-Ahly for £650,000 on a three-year deal, while releasing the experienced Jason Euell to make a free transfer to Southampton.

As the midnight deadline approached, Reading signed Liam Rosenior from Fulham with Seol Ki-Hyeon moving in the opposite direction.

Fulham were one of the most active teams, Danny Murphy also joining on a one-year deal from Tottenham.

Fulham midfielder Papa Bouba Diop became Portsmouth's second signing of transfer deadline day.

Having already signed spent £4million to sign Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson on a four-year contract, Pompey boss Harry Redknapp signed the Senegal international on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

One player who had already departed Fratton Park was Dejan Stefanovic, who joined Fulham for £1million on a two-year deal, subject to a work permit.

Elsewhere, the busiest managers could be found in the midlands with Aston Villa, Birmingham and Derby all making moves.

Martin O'Neill's pursuit of defender Curtis Davies finally came to a successful conclusion in what could be a potential club-record deal.

The West Brom centre-half secured a season-long loan at Villa with a view to a permanent switch which would be worth an initial £8.5million, possibly rising to £10million with add-ons.

O'Neill, who also signed Zat Knight this week, then made Togo midfielder Moustapha Salifou his third buy during the last 48 hours, signing him from Swiss club FC Wil on a one-year contract.

Scotland striker Kenny Miller swapped Celtic Park for Pride Park after joining Derby for an undisclosed fee.

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce secured the services of free agent Mohammed Kallon, midfielder Wilson Palacios on loan from Honduran club Olimpia until the end of December and Borja Oubina on a season-long loan from Celta Vigo with 'minutes to spare'.

Manchester City striker Bernardo Corradi joined Parma on loan until the end of the season.

Wigan boss Chris Hutchings made his ninth signing of the summer by bringing striker Marcus Bent in on loan from Charlton. Bent's arrival has allowed Wigan to sell Caleb Folan to Hull.

Liverpool's Anthony Le Tallec has joined French side Le Mans on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Crystal Palace have signed Manchester City striker Paul Dickov on loan until January while Finland international Shefki Kuqi has joined Fulham on a similar deal.
