EPL Result: Wigan 0-1 Liverpool

Yossi Benayoun ended Liverpool's mini crisis with the only goal of the game as Wigan suffered a 17th defeat in 17 matches against the Barclays Premier League's fabled 'big four'.

Liverpool had endured goalless draws in their previous two league games, sparking much criticism of boss Rafael Benitez's rotation policy.

In the end it was substitute Benayoun, a £5million buy from West Ham in the summer, who netted a 75th minute winner for his first league goal for the Reds.

From Wigan's perspective, it was another brave yet fruitless performance against one of the big boys as they have still to take a point off Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United since they were promoted to the top flight in 2005.

At least this was a dramatic improvement on the corresponding fixture last season, when they were 4-0 down at the interval.

On that occasion they were torn apart from the opening whistle, primarily due to the pace of former striker Craig Bellamy, to which the Latics could find no answer.

There was no Bellamy this time around - sold to West Ham in the summer - but instead there was Fernando Torres, the club record £26million replacement.

There had been a great debate surrounding Torres in the build-up to this encounter due to Benitez's continual rotation of his stars.

Torres had sat on the bench for the previous two league matches in which Liverpool had failed to score at Portsmouth and at home to Birmingham.

Benitez then handed the Spain international a start in the midweek Carling Cup tie at Reading, and he responded with a hat-trick.

That prompted speculation as to whether Benitez should play the 23-year-old from the off against Wigan and he ultimately opted to pair him with Dirk Kuyt.

He had Liverpool's three best chances in an opening 45 minutes in which goalkeeper Jose Reina was a virtual spectator.

That was due to Wigan being deprived of their two first-choice strikers, with Antoine Sibierski, a late withdrawal with a hamstring problem, joining Emile Heskey on the sidelines.

That led to boss Chris Hutchings handing Julius Aghahowa his first start this season alongside Marcus Bent, and the lack of cohesion and understanding between the duo was alarming.

After Wigan had started brightly, Liverpool edged into the game with every minute that passed and after Jermaine Pennant and John Arne Riise had shots blocked, Torres took over.

His first effort in the 25th minute was scuffed after Kuyt had delightfully cushioned a downward header to a Pennant cross into his path, giving Kirkland a comfortable take.

His second on the half hour came after a woeful error from life-long Reds fan Jason Koumas, who sprayed a pass along the halfway line directly to Kuyt.

The Holland forward immediately set Torres clear, and after outpacing Emmerson Boyce, he stabbed a shot goalwards that was blocked at point-blank range by Kirkland.

Wigan were then fortunate as the ricochet sprang off the Spaniard and rebounded inches past the left-hand post.

The spectacular followed from Torres two minutes later with a scissor kick that was just wide after rising to meet a right-wing ball from Alvaro Arbeloa, with Wigan's defence nowhere.

But then after the break Torres went missing as Wigan played with a fierce determination to their game, in particular with Titus Bramble an immense presence in defence.

Bent did have the ball in the net in the 50th minute, but it was controversially ruled out, stifling his delight.

Aghahowa, running back when the ball was played in by Josip Skoko, was offside, but not Bent, who was three yards on when the cross was delivered.

Koumas forced Reina into his only meaningful save of the game five minutes later, before a combination of Kirkland and Skoko denied Kuyt soon after.

As the game started to swing from end to end, an ungainly flick from Paul Scharner as he beat Reina to a Koumas ball over the top finished agonisingly wide.

Then, after Gerrard had screamed a 25-yard drive narrowly past the right-hand post, the Reds finally broke the deadlock 15 minutes from time.

Benayoun, on for Fabio Aurelio in the 56th minute, had plenty of work to do in picking up the ball a few yards outside the Wigan area.

But with an innocuous flick he gave himself time and space before beating Kirkland with a low shot.

Wigan, though, should have taken a point, only for Aghahowa to bury a six-yard header to a Koumas cross inches wide in the first of three minutes of injury time.

Fernando Torres hit a second-half hat-trick to earn Liverpool a 4-2 win and a place in the fourth round of the Carling Cup and send a timely reminder to coach Rafael Benitez.

Benitez had left the Spanish striker, signed for £24million from Atletico Madrid in the summer, out of the starting line-up for their last two Barclays Premier League matches.

But he returned with a vengeance to kill off battling Reading in a six-goal thriller at the Madejski Stadium.

Liverpool, unbeaten in nine games this season, made nine changes to the side which drew with Birmingham 0-0 at the weekend. Only captain Jamie Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa survived from that team.

Reading made eight changes to the side which defeated Wigan 2-1 with Nicky Shorey, James Harper and Michael Duberry the only ones to retain their places.

There was no hint of the drama to come after a disappointing opening to the tie. Reading should have gone ahead in the 20th minute when a cross from John Halls fell perfectly for Leroy Lita on the edge of the six-yard box.

But the Reading striker failed to beat Liverpool's debutant goalkeeper Charles Itandje who collected his downward header with ease.

Liverpool went ahead in the 23rd minute thanks to a magnificent piece of individual skill from Yossi Benayoun. He went on a solo run and beat Andre Bikey on the edge of the penalty area before firing a right-footed shot into the roof of the net.

However, the lead was shortlived as Reading were level in the 27th minute through Bobby Convey.

A corner from Nicky Shorey appeared to have been cleared by Momo Sissoko's header but the ball fell invitingly for Convey and his angled volley found its way into the corner of the net.

Torres, who had required lengthy treatment in the opening minute after a tackle by Bikey, went down again under a challenge from Duberry in the 34th minute.

But he managed to run off the knock to his left ankle once more as Liverpool attempted to restore their advantage.

However, it was Reading who almost stole the lead before the break and again it was Convey who provided the threat.

He looked certain to score his second of the game when the ball fell to him on the edge of the six-yard box but this time the Reading winger's volley was superbly saved by Itandje.

Liverpool spurned a real chance to restore their lead in the 48th minute when Torres set up Sebastian Leto but the Reds defender sent his shot wide of the far post.

But the Merseysiders were back in front a minute later when Leto sent Torres through the middle with a slide-rule pass.

The Spaniard made no mistake as he slipped the ball beyond Federici and into the corner of the net for the first of his terrific treble.

Moments later Bikey was booked for a foul on Torres as the Spaniard attempted to show him a clean pair of heels.

Torres probably did not think he would be taking part in the Carling Cup when he signed for the Reds in the summer but after being rested for Liverpool's last two Barclays Premier league games, he was clearly in the mood to send the right message to Benitez.

The Spanish superstar may have found his omission hard to reconcile but the goal took his tally for the season to four in six starts.

But while Torres was displaying all the reasons why Liverpool paid out £24million for him, Reading were far from finished.

In the 64th minute Liverpool failed to deal with another Reading corner adequately enough and when the ball fell to Halls, his quick footwork allowed him to send a low shot into the corner of the net for their second equaliser of the night.

But Torres struck for a second time in the 70th minute when he converted a low cross from substitute John Arne Riise to restore Liverpool's lead.

The Spaniard was now in his element and four minutes from the end he capped a superb performance with his hat-trick.

England midfielder Steven Gerrard, on as a late substitute, put Torres in the clear and he kept his cool to round Federici and slot the ball into the waiting net.

Result: Liverpool 0-0 Birmingham

Liverpool0 - 0Birmingham

00

The voices of Birmingham's delighted fans boomed around Anfield at the end of this bitterly frustrating goalless draw for Liverpool.

They may be still unbeaten and boss Rafael Benitez was able to utilise £40million plus of striking talent, but nobody had the ability to prise open the massed blue ranks.

Birmingham unashamedly strung 10 men across their own penalty area at times and fought like lions for a point.

The Midlanders were clearly not going to be letting themselves suffer a six-goal thrashing like Derby did recently, and set out to suffocate the life from Liverpool's game. Steve Bruce's side more than achieved their aim - and fully deserved the point.

Liam Ridgewell and Johan Djourou were outstanding at the back and Benitez has still to register a league win over Bruce's men after five attempts.

Benitez restricted himself to just two changes - he has been averaging five a match so far this term - from the team which drew their Champions League game in Porto in midweek.

Fit-again John Arne Riise returned in defence with Andriy Voronin coming in up front as Liverpool attempted to maintain their unbeaten record this term.

Birmingham arrived with a suffocating gameplan, and set about frustrating Liverpool from the start.

Liverpool might have put six goals past Derby last time out in the league at Anfield, but Birmingham looked a totally different proposition. They strung five across a deep midfield and worked to deny Liverpool space to run into.

Ryan Babel combined to play Riise in on the left, and his fierce low cross was too far ahead of Voronin.

Babel then cut in from the left and found Dirk Kuyt - but the striker was forced into a hurried shot wide.

Birmingham's system, though, was disrupted on 16 minutes by what looked a bad injury to Borja Oubina on his full debut for the Midlanders - the loanee from Celta Vigo was carried off and replaced by Gary McSheffrey.

Mehdi Nafti moved into the midfield holding role and immediately there was space for Riise to fire a dipping 20-yard effort just over.

Birmingham were regimented and organised, and were forcing Liverpool to make all the decisions.

Chances were rare, with Kuyt heading wide from a Steven Gerrard cross in the 26th minute.

Jermaine Pennant, against his old club, was switched from right to left wing - and Babel moved in the opposite direction, but openings, space and time on the ball remained at a premium.

Birmingham at times had 10 players in their final third - with Cameron Jerome the exception - but Bruce's men were sticking to their plan diligently.

Pennant produced a 25-yard effort which was turned over the bar by Maik Taylor, before Jose Reina made his only contribution to the first half when Wilson Palacios shot from 25 yards.

Liverpool continued to toil after the break and Jamie Carragher saw an 18-yard effort deflected just over.

From Pennant's corner, Gerrard stabbed in a near-post effort which Nafti cleared off the line.

Voronin was next to go close, stumbling as he picked up a through ball, but he was still able to fire in a low shot that Taylor saved well to his left.

Liverpool sent on Fernando Torres for Babel on the hour, before Olivier Kapo forced Reina into a save with a shot from 30 yards.

Liam Ridgewell was then booked in the 62nd minute for obstructing Reina as he tried to kick clear.

Birmingham increasingly fancied their chances and five minutes later they sent on an extra striker in Garry O'Connor for Palacios.

Peter Crouch finally got on after 74 minutes to add some aerial threat, replacing Voronin - and two minutes later Torres produced an overhead kick which flashed inches over from Pennant's corner.

Birmingham were looking now to punish Liverpool on the break and McSheffrey almost achieved that with an 18-yard effort which went just over.

Rafael Schmitz replaced Jerome in the 79th minute, as Liverpool's players began to getting in the way of each other in their desperation for a goal.

Torres' backheel was meant for Gerrard's run - but Crouch collided with his more-than-annoyed captain six yards out.

Steve Finnan replaced the injured Pennant with three minutes left, the winger looking to have picked up a hamstring problem.

Gerrard's corner soon after found Crouch rising unchallenged, but he could only bounce his header into the Kop, summing up Liverpool's day.

UCL: FC Porto 1-1 Liverpool: 10-man Reds hang on

FC Porto1 - 1Liverpool

1 - 1Dirk Kuyt

Liverpool escaped with a precious point from a dreadful performance in their opening Champions League Group A clash against Porto in the Estadio Dragao.

Liverpool, particularly in the first period, were just awful and at times Porto threatened to over-run them.

The Anfield men played the final 32 minutes with 10 men after Jermaine Pennant tested the patience of referee Michel Lubos once too often with a frustrated, fractious display that cost him two yellow cards.

Porto had led early on through a Lucho Gonzalez penalty but had to thank Dirk Kuyt for a priceless header on 17 minutes.

That gave Liverpool something to cling onto, and they at least managed that level of resilience when it mattered.

As it was the heroes were the hard-working Kuyt and dependable defender Alvaro Arbeloa as Porto failed to find a way through.

Last season's beaten finalists looked a shambles in the opening period, a segment of play as bad as anything they have produced under Rafael Benitez.

They were without midfielder Xabi Alonso, who had failed to recover from an ankle problem initially sustained at Portsmouth on Saturday, and aggravated last night in training, but there was no excuse for such a disjointed spell.

Benitez had made six changes from the side that drew at Fratton Park, with Sami Hyypia at the back, Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano and Ryan Babel returning to midfield with what looks now like his first-choice front pairing of Fernando Torres and Kuyt.

And they looked like strangers against a slick attack. The Portuguese champions were led by inspired skipper Gonzalez, a summer target of Everton, plus the exciting skills of Ricardo Quaresma who has been linked to Chelsea.

And it was the 23-year-old who almost set up a second minute Porto goal when his cross was deflected straight to Lisandro Lopez, standing six yards out and unmarked. Somehow Jose Reina got his body in the way of the instant shot.

Liverpool were under intense early pressure and another Quaresma angled effort flew just over, with Pennant fortunate not to be booked for slashing at Quaresma's legs.

Liverpool were barely in the game and a goal was inevitable. It came on eight minutes when Hyypia was slow to close down Tarik Sektioui, and Reina's challenge sent the Dutch striker to the ground. Gonzalez crashed home the penalty.

Liverpool's game was still error-strewn, but somehow they struck back on 17 minutes. Steve Finnan lifted a free-kick deep into the box where Hyypia headed back across goal for Kuyt to head home from six yards.

Pennant was booked for another foul on Quaresma, and from the free-kick Bruno Alves headed wide from a glorious unmarked position in the box.

Lopez charged down a Hyypia clearance and Reina had to kick desperately to safety, Liverpool's back-line having plenty of trouble containing three swift strikers.

The unlikeliest of people, Gerrard, Mascherano and Jamie Carragher, kept giving the ball away or were caught in possession.

Pennant had to be pulled away from referee Lubos by Kuyt early in the second half as the winger complained about another decision going against him, the Slovakian official showing remarkable restraint.

Still Porto had much of the possession, moving it quickly to the flanks, in particular the right where Quaresma was a constant threat.

Pennant was not going to last much longer in this fractious mood, and on 58 minutes the referee lost patience.

Pennant chased a long pass into the corner and sent Raul Meireles crashing over the line in his eagerness to get the ball. He then claimed a corner and turned to argue with the linesman and referee.

The yellow card was already out, followed by the red and Pennant was off, a lack of discipline that will enrage Benitez who barely looked at the winger as he marched down the tunnel.

Hyypia cleared away from an open goal from Quaresma's lob.

Porto sent on Mariano Gonzalez and Mario Bolatti for Meireles and Sektioui on 65 minutes.

Torres was booked for dissent on 73 minutes, Kuyt for a foul two minutes later.

A minute later a disappointed Torres, who had worked hard but got nowhere all evening, was replaced by Andriy Voronin.

Gerrard had a rare chance in the box when he volleyed wide from an Arbeloa angled ball into the box, but it was soon all hands to the pump at the other end.

On 85 minutes, Fabio Aurelio came on for Ryan Babel and Liverpool managed to get away with a point from one of their poorest displays in a long time.

UCL: FC Porto v Liverpool: Preview

19:45 UKFC Porto - Liverpool

Rafael Benitez wants his Liverpool team to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League long before the end of the their group matches.

The Anfield chief has already admitted he sees the Barclays Premier League as his priority for this season, a statement made well ahead of their opening Champions League group A match here in Porto.

In recent seasons, Liverpool have frequently had to rely on last-day heroics - something skipper Steven Gerrard has been forced to specialise in - to make sure that the club reaches the last 16.

That, insists Benitez, has to change if the club are to have any chance of managing their Premier League campaign successfully.

Last season was the first time in the competition's current format that they went into the final group game in Istanbul against Galatasaray with their destiny already assured.

And now Benitez wants that scenario repeated so that when they arrive in Marseille for their last group match in early December, their fate will already be decided.

He said: ``It is clear that the perfect situation is to get to the last game and already be qualified for the next stage. Last season we achieved that and by the time we went to Galatasaray for the last group match, we had already qualified.

``This is something we must achieve regularly. The way to do that is to win from the very first match in the group, if you do that it is easier to manage the rest of the Champions League games and to be able to concentrate on the Premier League as well.''

With the Premier League title now the prize Benitez covets above all else, he does not need Champions League problems getting in the way of that vision.

Benitez, who will be without full-back John Arne Riise in Portugal because of a groin injury sustained playing for Norway last week, has a very clear objective as the group matches unfold over next three months.

He says: ``We are not thinking of drawing this one, like we did with last season's first group game in Eindhoven, we are aiming to win.

``I feel we need 12 points to get through to the next stage. Some people say 10 is enough, but if we win our three home games and then achieve one away win, that should be enough.

``So it is important that we win early in the group, and not have to depend on the last match. It is best to have the points now, that is what you need and that is why we aim to win here in Porto.

``I know the group and the quality of the teams, it will be difficult but we know what we need to do.

``We have confidence and experience in Europe, we should be able to manage the situation.''

As the domestic season hots up, Benitez wants to rotate his large squad to make sure the title campaign stays on track, with the Champions League qualification already in the bag.

That is the real step up Liverpool, despite two final appearances in three seasons, have to make.

That is how the real top teams in Europe manage their seasons. And it is something that Liverpool, apart from last term, have struggled to achieve.

But this is a new Liverpool. One with vast money spent on rebuilding Benitez's squad, and they will be expected to act with the confidence and arrogance Manchester United and AC Milan have done over the years.

Benitez adds: ``As a top side you must think of winning every competition, everything is a challenge, but right now we can concentrate on the Champions League.

``If we win this one, it will give us the opportunity to clinch qualification early. That is important, if we can start winning now it makes it easier later on.

``Then you can start counting the points, we will be happy then and then think about everything else we are chasing.''

Liverpool face a Porto side with a 100% record at the head of the Portuguese league after four successive wins.

Benitez continued: ``We have confidence and experience in Europe, we should be able to manage the situation.

``But Porto are a difficult opponent. Every season they seem to sell very good players, but always they have a good team and do well in Europe.''

Benitez is expected to start with Gerrard and Fernando Torres, both on the bench for the 0-0 draw at Portsmouth on Saturday, with Dirk Kuyt expected to partner the Spanish star up front.

Premier League: Gunners pile on Jol misery

Two stunning long-range strikes from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor saw Arsenal brush aside north London rivals Tottenham 3-1 at White Hart Lane to go top of the Barclays Premier League.

A trademark free-kick from Spurs' teenage star Gareth Bale gave the hosts the lead after 15 minutes before Adebayor equalised after 65 minutes.

Both sides had plenty of chances in a free-flowing derby but Fabregas continued his fine goalscoring record this season by drilling home a powerful drive from 30 yards.

That seemed to have sealed Tottenham's fate - and heaped more pressure on manager Martin Jol - but Adebayor's injury-time effort, a thunderous volley on the turn put daylight between the sides.

Manchester United had earlier briefly gone level on points with Liverpool at the top of the table but needed Nemanja Vidic to score a late winner against Everton at Goodison Park.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side, who have yet to show the form which saw them wrest the title from Chelsea last year, were heading for a goalless draw when the Serbian centre-half climbed highest to meet Nani's corner and break the deadlock.

That goal, in the 83rd minute, sealed the points but was unlucky on an Everton side who could have taken the lead when Andrew Johnson saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line by Paul Scholes.

The former England midfielder had earlier gone close but missed with a volley from 10 yards.

Liverpool, who lead United on goal difference, could not match their all-action display against Derby last time out and instead stuttered to a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.

Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel all started on the bench as Reds boss Rafael Benitez shuffled his pack.

Andriy Voronin went closer than anybody else, striking the crossbar with an opportunistic volley while Jose Reina saved his side at the other end, beating away Kanu's first-half penalty.

West Ham launched a second-half onslaught to condemn Middlesbrough to a 3-0 defeat at Upton Park.

Lee Bowyer's fine volley opened the scoring after 46 minutes after good approach work from Carlton Cole, who was a first-half replacement for the injured Craig Bellamy.

Cole then had a hand in the second, an unfortunate own goal from Luke Young who turned his cross past his own goalkeeper.

Dean Ashton then claimed his first goal since recovering from a punishing series of injuries which kept him out for the whole of last season.

Tuncay Sanli, on for the injured Jeremie Aliadiere, was unlucky to see his deft chip hit the woodwork but Boro were well beaten.

Clint Dempsey gave Fulham a half-time lead over Wigan at the JJB Stadium but Jason Koumas' penalty 10 minutes from time saw it finish 1-1.

Dempsey pounced in the 11th minute, turning the ball home left-footed from 12 yards but more worrying for the Latics was the sight of recalled England striker Emile Heskey limping from the pitch.

Hameur Bouazza was penalised for an 80th-minute foul on Mario Melchiot, allowing Koumas to equalise from 12 yards.

At the Stadium of Light, £5million signing Kenwyne Jones started to repay his transfer fee with one goal and one assist in the 2-1 win over Reading.

The former Southampton man gave the Black Cats the lead in the first period when he cut inside his man before smashing the ball left-footed past Marcus Hahnemann.

He started the second half just as brightly, playing in Ross Wallace 90 seconds after the restart and allowing the Scot to slot home before Dave Kitson headed the Royals' consolation.

Sunderland's fellow Premier League newcomers Birmingham also earned three points against strugglers Bolton.

Olivier Kapo grabbed his second of the season when he turned home Sebastien Larsson's teasing cross after 37 minutes, with the Swede later hitting the bar with a curling free-kick from the edge of the box.

Chelsea were made to settle for a point against Blackburn after a second half `goal' was controversially ruled out by referee Howard Webb. Chelsea looked to have sealed all three points when Salomon Kalou converted a cross from Juliano Belletti but Webb disallowed the goal for offside.

Chelsea had squandered a host of first-half chances but Blackburn, who lost defender Christopher Samba late in the game with a serious head injury, could have stolen the points if Petr Cech had not tipped Robbie Savage's late effort over the crossbar.

Portsmouth 0-0 Liverpool, Kanu's penalty missed

Portsmouth0 - 0Liverpool
32'Nwankwo Kanu (pen miss)0 - 0

00

Jose Reina's first-half penalty save from Kanu and missed sitters by Portsmouth's John Utaka and Sulley Muntari let Liverpool off the hook in a scoreless scrap at Fratton Park, where Rafael Benitez's side had been beaten on three of their last five visits.

When Spain international Reina plunged to stop Kanu's spot-kick in the 31st minute after referee Mike Riley pointed to the spot for Alvaro Arbeloa's tug on the Nigerian's shirt, Liverpool should have gone on and wrapped up another victory to take them clear at the top of the Premier League.

But although dangerous Ukrainian Andriy Voronin hit the bar and then was inches from a winner late on, it was Pompey who spurned the biggest opportunities.

After taking just one point from meetings with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, this was their chance to pull down a top-four giant, but their finishing let them down.

Despite the 6-0 destruction of Derby which put Liverpool top of the division, manager Benitez swapped over his main strikers, going in with former Pompey star Peter Crouch's first league start of the season alongside Voronin.

Portsmouth's £6million striker, David Nugent, and Croatia midfielder Nico Kranjcar also had to be content with places on the bench, but on a hot, sticky afternoon and in front of a packed Fratton Park crowd it was still not a bad place to be.

With only three minutes on the clock, Pompey keeper David James had to be alert to go down and turn away a fierce shot by Yossi Benayoun for a corner.

At the other end, Pompey's giant debutant, Papa Bouba Diop, was head and shoulders above all challengers to meet Sean Davis's free-kick with his head but could not direct his effort on target.

Muntari appeared to be fouled by Xabi Alonso when Liverpool broke up a Portsmouth attack and pressed forward in the 10th minute. Voronin battled for possession and squared his pass for Alonso to drive not far over from 30 yards.

But it needed another fine save by James to keep out Liverpool seven minutes later when Mohamed Sissoko's pass put Crouch in for an angled shot which the keeper stopped with a strong left wrist.

Pompey were relieved when Alonso's free-kick from 25 yards crashed into their defensive wall after Mali midfielder Sissoko went down too easily from a tangle with Muntari, but Liverpool looked full of scoring options in the first 25 minutes.

Yet it was Pompey who almost broke the deadlock when Benjani's powerful low drive caught a deflection off Alvaro Arbeloa which took it out for a corner.

It was Arbeloa who was judged by referee Riley to have tugged Kanu's shirt just inside the area as they jockeyed for possession and the Spaniard was, of course, most grateful to compatriot Reina for a spectacular plunge that kept out Kanu's spot-kick.

Liverpool might have been expected to push on from there and take the game by the scruff of the neck, but they failed to make another worthwhile chance before the break.

Indeed, after Crouch brilliantly back-heeled a Steve Finnan pass just over James' bar, they had a couple of major escapes.

First, £7million Utaka, with all the goal to aim at after Diop forced the ball through, slashed his effort wide with only Reina to beat in the 52nd minute.

Then the goal was gaping again when energetic £7.2million record buy Muntari hooked Kanu's lay-back off target.

In between, Voronin's half-volley clipped the bar when Pompey were caught napping at the back, but even the arrival of £23million Torres and midweek England hero Gerrard from the bench for the last half-hour failed to do the trick.

That was despite Gerrard robbing a dithering Diop, who had been booked before the penalty, to send the Spaniard sprinting in to shoot high and wide.

The pace was unrelenting and just before the end Voronin was inches away from converting a Torres cross, but defeat for battling Pompey would have been a sad injustice.

Harry Redknapp was the happier of the two managers after Portsmouth's goalless draw with Liverpool at Fratton Park - even though his side missed a first-half penalty.

Kanu saw his spot-kick saved by Jose Reina after having his shirt pulled by Alvaro Arbeloa while John Utaka and Sulley Muntari missed good chances in the second half against the below-par visitors.

'It was an even game. We had a couple of great chances. For Kanu's penalty, when you get the chance you have to stick it away against Liverpool and if we had got in front I'm sure we would have gone and won the the game,' said Redknapp.

'But if you take a point from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal you are never going to complain because they are top teams.'

The Portsmouth boss also paid tribute to man of the match Papa Bouba Diop on his first appearance for the club.

'I thought Diop was fantastic - what a debut. I have always been a fan of his. He is big and he has got a presence about him.'

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, who decided to leave captain Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel on the bench until the second half after their spells on international duty, put on a brave face.

'I think we played well. We played a good counter-attack. I think they had one or two clear chances from mistakes and I cannot complain [about the penalty],' he said.

The Spaniard also defended his decision to rest his major players.

'In the first half we were better than them. That means the players were doing a good job,' he said.

Ferguson: Top teams punished for success

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Liverpool counterpart Rafael Benitez's complaints over the Premier League fixture scheduling and claimed clubs like his own are being punished for their success.

Benitez is fuming at the number of Saturday lunchtime away games Liverpool find themselves involved in immediately after international breaks and Champions League weeks.

Manchester United often find themselves in the same situation and head to Everton tomorrow for a noon start at Goodison Park.

Although on this occasion the kick-off time has been determined by Merseyside Police rather than the TV companies, Ferguson does believe there is an issue to be addressed.

And the Red Devils chief is laying the blame squarely at the Premier League's door.

'Rafa is quite right to complain,' said Ferguson.

'If there is an unfairness against teams, it should be addressed but I don't know if the authorities would listen.

'Over the last five years, we have had more lunchtime kick-offs than anyone and you would think that deserves some kind of attention.

'The Premier League are to blame. I accept, given when the fixture lists come out, it is just unfortunate if you find yourself away from home after a European tie but Rafa is talking about the lunchtime kick-offs.'

Ferguson does accept pleasing every interested party is an impossible job for anyone.

And, in accepting an enormous £1.7billion cheque from Sky and Setanta for the domestic TV rights, the United manager also acknowledges the Premier League has given up any realistic control over kick-off times.

But he feels there are elements of unfairness about the way the Premier League handle certain situations, citing the differing examples of his own club and major title rivals Chelsea last year.

'Chelsea had a Sunday game against Tottenham and the Premier League changed it at their behest because they had a European tie the following Tuesday,' he said.

'That decision gave Chelsea three days to prepare, which is fine, except Tottenham had played their own European game on the previous Thursday, which left them with one-and-a-half days to prepare.

'There was no fairness there whatsoever.

'Then, when we asked for a Saturday lunchtime fixture at Manchester City to be changed because we had a Champions League semi-final the previous Wednesday, the Premier League said no, even though City had not played at all. That was wonderful.'

Ferguson continued: 'I do think the successful teams are punished.

'The top teams are always going to be televised at a time that suits the public demand. Sky and Setanta are always going to pick the successful teams for the prime-time games, you can't blame them for that given the amount of money they have put it.

'Money is important to every club now, so they do a deal. But once you shake hands with the devil, you have to accept they are in control.'

Liverpool made it 10 home goals in a week with a 6-0 home rout of Derby to underline the belief at Anfield that they are genuine Premier League title contenders.

They followed up the four they put past Toulouse in the Champions League on Tuesday with two goals apiece from Spaniards Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso, Ryan Babel's first for the club and one from substitute Andriy Voronin.

It is the first time Liverpool have led the top flight for five years and their best start to a league season since 1998.
